But something else appeared to be on his mind. Gambino was wearing a shirt that showed a picture of his father; the phrase R.I.P. Dad had been shaved onto the back of his head. That’s because on May 21, Gambino’s father, Gabriel Crespo, 27, was shot and killed near the intersection of 25th Street and River Avenue at 10 p.m. – Camden’s 24th homicide of the year. As though to comment on that very act of violence, the tournament’s organizer declared Saturday a “No Crime Day for Camden.” “This is why it’s so important to put the guns down,” Chris Williams, who has directed the boxing academy for 15 years, told the crowd.
Gonzales was in command early, taking Oosthuizens game plan away from him. The South African came on just enough in the late rounds to save his record. Gonzales is a fighter worth seeing again. But from what I understand the permanent rules will be in place later this year. Pro boxing supporters are eager for that administrative process to be completed and optimistic it will lead to a resurgence of the sport within the states borders. I think boxings got a great future here if we can just get past the red tape, said Russo.
